Hot or Cold, what coffee do people order the most ?

Imagine you’re walking into a coffee shop, what item would you order? If you ask a European or an Australian, they would probably say hot coffee, but I bet the majority of Thai people would definitely order iced coffee.

In fact, the popularity of hot or cold coffee depends on many factors, such as culture, beliefs, and weather. In Thailand, where the scorching weather is deeply rooted in the culture, drinking a cold beverage is an effective and extremely accessible way to beat the heat. When you think of coffee, the first thing that pops into your mind is therefore a cold beverage.

Even though iced coffee is the most ordered drink in Thailand, it is often overlooked in the coffee industry. Most people tend to be busy learning and practicing how to make good hot coffee — mastering latte art, steaming milk, and much more. This is because hot coffee is seen as difficult, challenging, and a demonstration of skill. However, since hot coffee is only actually ordered a few cups a day, focusing on making great hot coffee might not be the most important thing; rather, it is about making seemingly simple iced coffee turn out exceptionally well.

The key player in iced coffee is the espresso shot, it serves as the foundation for the coffee's flavor and aroma; a good espresso shot leads to delicious iced coffee. Equally important is the ratio of coffee, ice, and water or milk, which determines how the flavors are drawn out and presented. Therefore, choosing the right coffee beans is crucial for delivering an interesting coffee experience.

Every shop's coffee blend offers a different flavor profile, but serving great iced coffee generally requires at least two blends. First, medium-to-dark roast, featuring dark chocolate and nutty notes with a full body, this is ideal for milk-based coffees like lattes. Second, medium-to-light roast, featuring fruity notes, making it easy to drink with a lighter body, this is ideal for Americanos.

After all, what coffee you choose or how you serve it depends on what do you value the most in your coffee shop.
